How Giordanos Became Chicago's Most Beloved Pizza

The legendary giordano's deep dish pizza was born in 1974 from the warm, flour-dusted hands of Mama Giordano, who brought her cherished Italian Easter pie recipe from the Piedmont region straight to the heart of Chicago.

Brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio, inspired by their mother's devotion to craft, opened the first giordanos location on the South Side of Chicago. The recipe was simple in spirit but extraordinary in execution — a thick, buttery crust, filled to the brim with stretchy mozzarella cheese, fresh toppings, and a robust, slow-simmered tomato sauce on top.

Word spread quickly. Chicagoans lined up around the block. Food writers took notice. And soon, the name giordanos pizza became synonymous with the gold standard of deep dish in the United States. Decades later, we've grown — but our recipe, our values, and our love for great food remain unchanged.

The First Oven Is Lit

Brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio open the original Giordanos location at 2855 W. Balmoral Ave., Chicago, inspired by Mama Giordano's beloved Italian Easter pie recipe brought from Piedmont, Italy.

1980

Chicago Embraces Deep Dish

Giordanos earns its first major press coverage in the Chicago Tribune. Lines stretch out the door every weekend. The phrase "Best Deep Dish in Chicago" starts appearing in local guides.

1989
